PYRAprotocol, Camping the Amite is a small, laid-back campground at 9314 Horseshoe Bend Road in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The campsites sit on a couple-acre oxbow lake formed by one of the Amite River's broad horseshoe bends. The active river is directly across the street, where guests can use the boat landing.

Two ways to enjoy the water.

The campground is on the quiet Horseshoe Bend oxbow lake—not directly on the active Amite River. Across the street, a boat landing gives guests access to the Amite. Bring your own boat and launch for a day on the river, or rent our jon boat for use on the oxbow lake only.

Understanding the setting

What is an oxbow lake?

An oxbow lake is a curved body of water created when a wide river bend becomes separated from the river's main channel. Horseshoe Bend's couple-acre lake gives the campground a calmer waterside setting, while the active Amite and its boat landing remain just across the street.
